Why mould is more dangerous for kids than adults

Mould might seem like just an unsightly nuisance on your walls or bathroom tiles, but when it comes to children, the danger runs much deeper. Their developing lungs, weaker immune systems, and growing bodies make them especially vulnerable to the effects of mould exposure.

So, what makes mould more harmful for kids than adults? And what can you do to protect your family from it?

1. Kids breathe more air per kilo than adults

Children breathe more rapidly than adults, meaning they take in more air — and with it, more airborne mould spores. If mould is present in the home, kids are likely to inhale higher concentrations relative to their body weight.

This increases their risk of developing:

  • Asthma or asthma-like symptoms
  • Chronic coughing, sneezing, or congestion
  • Respiratory infections

2. Their immune systems aren’t fully developed

A child’s immune system is still learning to recognise and fight off harmful substances. When exposed to mould, their body may struggle to respond appropriately, potentially leading to heightened allergic reactions or prolonged illness.

Some children may also become sensitised to mould, making them more prone to allergic reactions or respiratory issues in future exposures.

3. Long-term exposure can affect development

Persistent exposure to mould, especially during the early years, may affect a child’s physical and cognitive development. Studies suggest links between indoor mould exposure and:

  • Increased days off school due to illness
  • Reduced attention and concentration
  • Poorer sleep quality

All of which can impact learning and quality of life.

4. Mould often grows where you can’t see it

Bathrooms, wardrobes, under beds, inside walls or carpets — these hidden areas are often damp and poorly ventilated, making them ideal breeding grounds for mould. Children, especially toddlers and babies, spend more time close to floors or soft furnishings, putting them closer to potential sources.

If your child often wakes up with a blocked nose, cough, or itchy eyes, hidden mould could be the cause.

5. How to protect your home from mould

Reducing moisture is the key to preventing mould growth. Here’s how:

  • Use a dehumidifier: Appliances like the Ionmax Vienne or Ionmax Rhine help maintain healthy indoor humidity levels, especially in colder, wetter months.
  • Ventilate regularly: Open windows and use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Clean up spills quickly: Especially on carpets or fabrics.
  • Watch for signs of damp: Bubbling paint, condensation, or musty smells often point to hidden mould.

Don’t wait for mould to grow

The best defence is prevention. Keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% makes it harder for mould to thrive.

A reliable dehumidifier not only helps protect your home, it safeguards your child’s health.
