At Ionmax, we’re committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of individuals living with disability by improving indoor air quality. If you are an NDIS participant or support coordinator, here’s what you need to know about whether air purifiers can be funded through the NDIS.
Are Air Purifiers Covered by the NDIS?
In some cases, yes.
According to the NDIS COVID Addendum 2024–25, participants may use their Core – Consumables budget to purchase a portable air purifier if they have a disability that compromises their breathing (e.g. asthma, low lung capacity) or puts them at higher risk from COVID-19.
NDIS Exclusions – What You Need to Know
As outlined on page 3 of the “Supports that are not NDIS funded supports” document:
“Standard household (including garden) items, appliances, tools and products” are generally not funded by the NDIS.
However, if you believe the item is a disability-related piece of assistive technology, you can email enquiries@ndis.gov.au to request confirmation from an NDIS planner that it is considered a reasonable and necessary support and can be funded through a participant’s plan.
What This Means for You
- Air purifiers may be eligible for NDIS funding, but it depends on your individual needs and plan goals.
- NDIS approvals for air purifiers are handled on a case-by-case basis.
- It's always best to discuss with your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator to determine eligibility.
- If required, you can also email enquiries@ndis.gov.au for written confirmation.
