Why indoor air quality gets worse in winter (and what you can do about it)

When the temperature drops, we naturally spend more time indoors with windows shut tight to keep warm. But while this makes our homes more comfortable, it also has a hidden downside: indoor air pollution.

According to a study on seasonal variations in indoor concentrations of air pollutants in residential buildings, average indoor pollutant levels were significantly higher during winter. PM10 levels rose to 119.4 ± 30.9 μg/m³ in winter compared to 98.8 ± 21.8 μg/m³ in summer, while PM2.5 reached 85.2 ± 25.8 μg/m³ in winter versus 67.8 ± 14.9 μg/m³ in summer.

Similarly, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide concentrations were higher in winter months due to reduced air exchange and increased use of combustion-based heating.

Common winter pollution culprits

  • Sealed homes: Closed windows and doors reduce airflow, trapping pollutants inside.
  • Heating: Wood heaters and gas appliances emit particulates and gases like CO and NO2.
  • Indoor activities: More cooking, use of candles, and general occupancy all increase particle load.
  • Humidity: Lower ventilation can lead to condensation and mould growth, worsening air quality.

SHOCKING STUDY: Scented products pollute your home like car exhausts?

What you can do to breathe easier this winter

  • Use an air purifier: A high-quality air purifier like the Ionmax+ AIRE X or Ionmax Breeze Plus can remove PM2.5, allergens, and odours.
  • Monitor your air: Devices like the Ionmax Q10 Air Quality Monitor helps track PM levels, temperature, and humidity in real time.
  • Ventilate when possible: Briefly opening windows during the day can help reduce indoor pollution.
  • Avoid unflued heaters: Opt for safer heating methods that don’t emit indoor pollutants like the Ionmax Ray far infrared heater.
  • Control moisture: Use a dehumidifier to prevent mould buildup and reduce airborne allergens.

The air may be invisible, but the risk isn’t

Winter air pollution is a silent issue that many Australians overlook. By understanding the causes and taking proactive steps, you can ensure your home remains a safe, healthy environment for your family all year round.
